SAN DIEGO (AP) _ The brother and parents of an American missionary who’s believed to be in North Korean custody are anxiously awaiting word on his whereabouts and safety.
Activists say Robert Park crossed into North Korea from China on Christmas, carrying a Bible and letters that urged North Korean leader Kim Jong Il to step down and close prison camps.
The 28-year-old Park, of Tucson, Ariz., has not been heard from since.
North Korea announced last Tuesday that an unidentified American was in custody and was being investigated after entering the country illegally from China.
Park’s brother, Paul Park of San Diego, says Swedish officials are trying to act as intermediaries. The U.S. does not have diplomatic relations with North Korea.
