PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Numerous faith-based groups are pitching in to help victims of flooding that devastated parts of Rhode Island earlier this spring.

In the last six weeks, the Jewish disaster relief agency Nechama, the Southern Baptist Convention Disaster Relief, Christian Disaster Relief, Mennonite Disaster Service and other religious organizations have sent volunteers to help Rhode Islanders.

Among Christian groups, many said they’re motivated by faith in Jesus and a call to help others.

Mennonite relief volunteer Melvin Roes said he never felt it necessary to preach.

But with some groups, the call to share the Gospel has been more direct. Tom Mobray, who coordinated efforts by the Samaritan’s Purse in Rhode Island, says volunteers handed out 96 Bibles.
